The GMDSS was adopted by the IMO in 1988 and replaces the 500 kHz Morse code system. The GMDSS is automated and uses ship-to-shore alerting by means of satellite radio in addition to terrestrial radio. There was a transition period from the old to the new system in order to allow time to overcome any unforeseen problems in implementation of the new system. The transition period began on 1 February 1992 and continued to 1 February 1999. Generally, there are four sub-systems about the GMDSS, they are: Terrestrial radio system, Inmarsat communication system, Fixing & homing system and Maritime safety information disseminating & receiving system.

If a station sends a DSC call to another, the two stations can use the 9-digits MMSI to identify each other. 6) make a distress call by pressing the distress button not less than 4 seconds.

Then make distress alert by radiotelephone on channel 16 as follows:
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY This is bulk carrier YUFENG, YUFENG, YUFENG MAYDAY, YUFENG I have run aground at 1645UTC at position 26°45’S 104°17’W,I require towing assistance immediately. Over.
